Hormozgan in the Nearchhos travelogue

Hormozgan province is located south of Iran, on the shore of Persian Gulf
and Makran Sea. The shores of Persian Gulf have been a part of Hormozgan
province since ancient times. Historical remains and archaeological findings
of the province date back to 10000 year B.C.. Moreover, historical and geographical
writings from 5th century B.C. also mention the shores of Persian
Gulf. One of the oldest texts to mention Persian Gulf and the Makran Sea
in Hormozgan province is the travelogue of Nearchus, written in the fourth
century B.C.. After arriving in India, Alexander the Macedonian ordered
some of his soldiers to march west from Indus Valley by the sea.
The objective of these soldiers was to take control of Suzian plain and Arvand
River, which ran through the heart of Iranshahr city.
Nearchus led the expedition west, and he recorded his experiences for future
generations. Crossing the Eastern shores, Nearchus reached Makran's
governor. He mentions a number of stories about Bandar-e-Badis (Jask),
Bandar-e-Hormoz-e-Kohne (Minab), Hormoz Islands, Qeshm, Kish, and
other Hormozgan shores.
His stories have been a guide for many historians and geographers in rebuilding
and writing the history of the area, and the dominion of the Persians
from ancient times till now. |
